Dear Readers,

With salt in the very air and the spiky roots breaking up from the muddy ground
The dense foliage that deceptively grows in the alcoves and trenches
And provides a sanctuary for species of all kinds
A mangrove forest brings alive the image of wilderness

These sentinels of the coast provide a bio shield to the coastal villages from cyclones and storms and the meshed webs of roots are nurseries and habitats for many species. They are intrinsically linked to the livelihoods of millions of people globally. These blue carbon ecosystems also sequester significant amounts of carbon.

From the kandalvan in the west to the hentalban in the east, Indian mangrove systems support a rich biodiversity. Indo German Biodiversity Programme is currently working in two mangrove areas - the genetically diverse Bhitarkanika and one of the largest mangroves in the world – Sundarbans, which we share with our neighboring country, Bangladesh.

In this issue, in celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem today, we bring to you a storybook for children discovering the wonders of Bhitarkanika mangroves, a field guide on important mangrove species and a film from our archives on this Green Coastal Infrastructure. The spotlight article is an effort towards understanding the role of women as stewards of wetlands conservation.

Warmly,
Editors

Guardians of Wetlands
Women as stewards of wetland conservation
Women have long been the stewards of our planet's rich natural heritage. Their intimate connection with nature shapes not only livelihoods but also the identities of communities.

Due to societal norms and perceived gender roles, women have been the natural resource managers. Globally, women manage water, food and fuel sourcing for their families, thus developing an understanding of their ecosystems and a relationship with their surroundings.

A Story book on the Mysterious Mangroves of Bhitarkanika
Through the story of two young children—Runu, who lives with her family on the outskirts of Bhitarkanika in Odisha, and Jehan, who visits the area with his father—readers are invited to explore the world of mangroves. They will embark on an awe-inspiring journey among the mysterious mangroves and encounter the animals and plants that form the rich tapestry of this unique habitat. Alongside Runu and Jehan, readers will discover feathered friends, magnificent saltwater crocodiles, and amazing turtles that travel thousands of miles to inhabit these areas. The mangroves, standing as coastal guardians, protect communities from storms. We hope this book will instill a deep appreciation for nature's complexity and convey the importance of collaborative efforts to preserve these fragile ecosystems. The book is available in both English and Odia.
